The Peppermint Pattie – A Success Story

To properly celebrate such a joyous occasion, one must know the tale behind it. The first Peppermint Pattie was brought into existence in 1940 by the York Cone Company, originally an ice cream cone manufacturer. In a move to expand business, a man named Henry C. Kessler wanted to create a new peppermint and chocolate candy. Something more firm and crisp than similar candies out there. It would become known as the now famous York Peppermint Pattie.

At first, only sold in the Northeast and randomly Florida, the Peppermint Pattie grew quickly in popularity. Helped by Charles M. Schultz’s comic Peanuts and the character Patricia “Peppermint Patty” Reichardt, created in 1966. In 1972 Peter Paul bought out York Cone Co. and began distributing the candy nationwide by 1975. A couple more business moves to Cadbury Schweppes and Hershey Chocolate and you get the present-day York Peppermint Pattie and all of its limited-edition flavors.
